The Youth of the Year Event will be an inspiring evening filled with youth member performances that will warm your heart with ‘oli, mele, moʻolelo and kalena to celebrate ‘ohana, community and ‘āina. The event will also include a banquet-style meal, silent and live auctions, guest speakers and honoring outstanding community supporters.

The Youth of the Year program is Boys & Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition program for Club members. This program promotes and celebrates service to Club, community and family; academic performance; moral character; life goals; and poise and public speaking ability.

Along with awarding the Big Island Youth of the Year, BGCBI will honor community supporters who have been instrumental in our Clubs’ success:

Mr. William Walter - Honoree of the Year
Mr. William Walter served as Board Chair of BGCBI from 2009 – 2011. He helped bring stability and executive expertise to BGCBI during his terms on the Board and continues to serve as a valued adviser. He is Chairman and CEO of W.H. Shipman, Ltd.  With this Award, we honor his high energy and unwavering support of Big Island youth.

Mr. Russell Chin – Champion of Youth Award
This award is to honor Mr. Russell Chin for his generous support and steadfast commitment to Hawaiʻi Island youth. He was a BGCBI Board member for over 10 years and for years he headed up our Annual Tee Off for Kids Golf Tournament Fundraiser. In 2013, he led the development of the Youth of the Year on Hawaii Island. He is Matson District Manager, Hawaiʻi Island. With this award, we honor his dedication to our Hawaiʻi Island youth.

For over 66 years, BGCBI has been positively impacting thousands of our Big Island youth by providing safe facilities and positive activities; instilling healthy living practices along with good character and leadership skills. Our Clubs in Hilo, Keaʻau, Kealakehe, Pāhala, Pāhoa and Ocean View present our young people with the opportunity to grow, learn and have fun.
